Public Protector investigating Mandela funeral
Public Protector Thuli Madonsela is investigating Eastern Cape municipalities for corruption relating to the Mandela funeral.
The municipalities are under investigation following allegations of corruption, maladministration, and unconsumable use of public funds relating to former president Nelson Mandela's funeral.
According to a Sapa report, the allegations relate to procurement of service providers for Mandela's memorial services and funeral. Thuli Madonsela's sspokeswoman Kgalalelo Masibi told Sapa that the the provincial government appointed the Eastern Cape Development Corporation as a provincial host and paymaster for the logistical arrangements and the funeral.
Other municipalities that are also under investigation are; Nelson Mandela metropolitan, OR Tambo, King Sabata Dalindyebo and Buffalo City municipalities.
The municipalities allegedly spent nearly R65 million on service providers for the funeral without following proper procurement procedures.
