Gunmen Kidnap 3 Doctors, 2 Other Health Workers In Rivers

Three doctors, a nurse and one other health worker have been kidnapped in Rivers State.
Vanguardgathered that the health workers were taken hostage at Okolomabo community in Abua/Odua Local Government Area.
Condemning the abduction, Coordinator, Niger Delta Youths for Positive Attitude Change and Progress, Mr Emmanule Enisuo, called for their unconditional release.
Community sources said the health workers were in the community for a free health care programme organised by the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.
Efforts to speak with the spokesman of the NDDC, Mr T. Abosede, on the matter was futile. Also, a text message to him on the issue was not responded to at press time.
Meantime, resident doctors at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital have called for unconditional release of another doctor of the hospital who was kidnapped in Tai Local Government Area of the state.
Dr Sam Kinaka was taken hostage by heavily armed men. It could not be confirmed if any contact had been established with relatives of any of the health workers for ransom payment.

Boko Haram Using Female Beggars For Suicide Bombings In Kano, Other States

Current intelligence reports on the emergence of female suicide bombers mostly in Kano and other states in northern Nigeria have been linked to the possible conscription of female beggars by Boko Haram members, investigations by THISDAY have revealed.
THISDAY learnt from reliable security sources in Abuja that the female beggars were banned and relocated outside the Kano metropolis by the state government sometime last year but were quickly recruited by the terrorists to disperse the attacks across Kano, Yobe and Gombe States, while the male recruits and Boko Haram members hold sway in Borno State.

A blogger who claimed the murder of soldier Lee Rigby was a hoax aimed at stirring up anti-Islam hatred was arrested in a 2am raid yesterday.
Christopher Spivey, 51, a tattoo artist from Rochford, Essex, was arrested on suspicion of harassment via social media after police raided his home and took away computer equipment.

'I accept that you live with remorse, but I live with tragedy every day,' the Cheers star said via satellite link at a Colorado parole hearing.
'I accept your apology. I forgive you. However, I cannot give your release my endorsement.'

A Malaysia Airlines plane was forced to abort a take-off after learning that it was on a collision course with an incoming airliner.

Flight MH136, which had 167 passengers on board, was already rolling down the runway at Adelaide Airport yesterday when it was forced to slam on the brakes.
Adelaide Air Traffic Control radioed the flight, bound for Kuala Lumpur,
with instructions to abort the takeoff after realising the plane was on a collision course with in incoming jet. Read more...

10 year old girl found wearing explosive device apparatus in Katsina

A 10 year old girl strapped with an explosive belt was yesterday July 29th discovered by security forces in company of two other people, a man and an 18 year old girl, while traveling along a road in Katsina state.

The DG of the National Information Center, Mr Mike Omeri said this while briefing news men at the National Information Center;
"Security forces on Tuesday, July 29, at about 10pm along Zaria Road, Tudun Wada of Funtua Metropolis, arrested three suspects believed to be members of the Boko Haram sect. The three suspects consisted a male named Iliya Haliru, and two females – Zainab Musa, 18, and Hadiza Musa, 10. The three suspects were arrested in a Honda CRV. When they were directed to disembark for security check, 10-year-old Hadiza was discovered to have been strapped with an explosive belt. And immediately, Iliya and Zainab made attempt to escape with the car but were later blocked by other concerned Nigerians and subsequently arrested. The police successfully unstrapped the explosive.”
He appealed to parents to monitor their wards so they do not get initiated into such evil acts.

Blake Beckford, 33, from Stratford-upon-Avon, suffers from the painful condition ulcerative colitis. The painful condition causes inflammation and ulceration of the inner lining of the rectum and colon, triggering symptoms such as diarrhoea and stomach cramps. A decade ago he was preparing to compete in a body-building competition when his symptoms prevented him from training and last October his health had deteriorated so much that he required surgery. Doctors removed his entire colon before fitting him with a stoma bag on the outside of his body to collect waste. He was warned that training would be dangerous but decided to go ahead anyway. Over the last six months he has bulked up to 13st 2lbs and has just appeared in ‘Men’s Fitness’ magazine. He said: 'I am determined to show people and society that having a stoma doesn’t change who you are. It doesn’t mean you’re not normal. You can achieve anything you want to do, you can be attractive, and you can lead a normal life.'

Eastbourne Pier is on fire with the blaze believed to have started in wall panelling, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said. Former police officer to be charged with murder of Azelle Rodney who died after being shot by police nine years ago

A former police officer is to be charged with the murder of robbery suspect Azelle Rodney in a landmark prosecution, it was revealed today.
The Crown Prosecution Service announced it would be bringing the charge against the marksman - who has only been identified as E7 - nine years after Mr Rodney died.
It is only the third time charges have been brought for murder against an officer while on duty.
The charge comes after a damning three-month public inquiry, chaired by a former High Court judge, concluded that Mr Rodney's killing was not justified.
At the time of his death in 2005, police were carrying out an operation to move in on Mr Rodney, who was wanted for a double stabbing in Ealing.
The officer who fired the shots - who was granted anonymity during the public inquiry - claimed he feared the suspect was about to fire a submachine gun.
But during the inquiry into the young man's death, Sir Christopher Holland said the officer's account of what happened was 'not accepted'.
Today, Mr Rodney's mother Susan Alexander said she hoped the prosecution - which comes nine years after her son's death - would lead to 'justice'.
She said: 'I am very pleased at the CPS's decision to prosecute the officer who killed my son.
'I have waited a long time to see this day and hope this prosecution will lead to justice for Azelle.'

Not again. Another female suicide bomber blew herself up at Aminu Kano College of Islamic Studies this afternoon July 30th around 2.45 as students were checking their results in the school.
Kano State Police Command confirmed the blast but didn't state the number of casualties.

No Nigerian Infected With Ebola Virus – Health Ministry

Nigerians have been advised to be calm and not panic over the reported case of Ebola Virus in Lagos State, with an assurance that no Nigerian is infected with the virus.
Addressing a press briefing, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, affirmed that there had only been one case of imported Ebola resulting in the death of a Liberian diplomat in Lagos. He emphasised that health authorities were being very proactive about the detection of the Ebola Virus in the Liberian by ensuring that all contacts were being actively followed.

Doctor who treated more than 100 Ebola patients dies from the virus

The Sierra Leonean doctor who treated more than 100 Ebola patients has also died. Dr Sheik Umar Khan (pictured above), who was hailed as a national hero for disregarding his own health and helping sick patients, died today July 29th from the disease after being diagnosed with the virus last week. He contacted the virus despite wearing protective gear when treating patients.
In an interview last month, the 39yr old doctor had expressed fears for his life because of his constant contact with Ebola patients.
"I am afraid for my life. Health workers are prone to the disease because we are the first port of call for somebody who is sickened by the disease. Even with the full protective clothing you put on, you are at risk" He told Reuters
His death comes days after a senior doctor at Liberia's largest hospital, Samuel Brisbane, died on Saturday at an Ebola treatment centre in Monrovia. 3 nurses working in the same Ebola treatment centre alongside Khan also died from the disease last week. Several other medics have been infected.

At least four women have been reported drowned in a river in aEbonyi State

At least four women have been reported drowned in a river as a result of a boat mishap that happened in Afikpo North Local Govern­ment Area of Ebonyi State at the weekend.
Daily Sun reported that the de­ceased and four other women, who went to a farm across the river in Cross River State, were returning to Afikpo when their boat capsized in Oziza River due to a windstorm.
